Efforts to improve literacy culture in the Papua region continue to be carried out by the Papua Provincial Government through the distribution of reading books to a number of community reading parks (TBM) and village libraries in several areas.
Through the Papua Provincial Archives and Library Office, the book assistance was channeled to Waropen Regency, Yapen Islands, and Supiori Regency as part of the program to equalize access to reading materials to the village and district areas.
The Head of the Papua Provincial Archives and Library Office, Ahmad Djalali, said that the program was a form of government commitment in supporting the development of community literacy, especially for children and the younger generation of Papua.
“The Papua Provincial Government continues to be committed to supporting the development of community literacy through the provision of reading books and strengthening community reading parks and village libraries,” he said in Jayapura, Tuesday.
The recipients of book assistance include the Solagrasia Baru Zaman Community Reading Park in Waropen Regency, the Ambai Village Library “Pustaka Anak Papua” in the Yapen Islands Regency, and the Douwbo Village Library of East Supiori District, Supiori Regency.
Each recipient received assistance as much as 40 book titles with various reading themes that are expected to be able to increase insight and increase people’s interest in reading, especially children in the village area.
The program is also a real step for the government in expanding access to non-formal education in remote areas as well as creating a study space that is closer to the community.
In addition to improving the culture of reading, the existence of reading gardens and village libraries is expected to be the center of education and development of the young Papuan generation so that they are more active in learning and have extensive knowledge to support the development of human resources in Papua.
