Deputy Minister of Home Affairs: Development of Newly Established Regions in Papua Makes Significant Progress

Jakarta – Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) Ribka Haluk stated that several provinces in Papua have shown significant progress in infrastructure development and strengthening public services, particularly in the newly autonomous regions (DOB).

Ribka revealed this progress, including the operational start-up of government facilities in South Papua. Meanwhile, construction has been completed in Southwest Papua.

“For Central Papua, the governor’s office is targeted for completion in December 2026. Meanwhile, Mountainous Papua is still in the planning stage,” Ribka said in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

She made this statement after accompanying Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on a series of working visits to several regions in Papua. The areas visited included Nabire Regency, Mimika Regency, Yahukimo Regency, Sorong Regency, and Raja Ampat Regency on April 20-22, 2026.

The visit focused on accelerating infrastructure development and strengthening public services, particularly in the new autonomous regions. This agenda also forms part of the government’s efforts to ensure a tangible presence among the Papuan people.

One of the main agenda items took place in Yahukimo. Vice President Gibran visited the Yahukimo Christian School to check on the implementation of the Free Nutritional Meals (MBG) program, visited the Dekai Regional Hospital to observe health services, and visited the Dekai Military District Command (Koramil 1715/06).

Similarly, Ribka emphasized the government’s commitment to accelerating government infrastructure development in new autonomous regions (DOBs). She explained that the central government, along with the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) and relevant ministries, is targeting all new autonomous regions in Papua to be fully operational by 2028.

Furthermore, the development of supporting infrastructure, such as airports and ports, continues to be encouraged to strengthen interregional connectivity.

The Ministry of Home Affairs hopes that these facilities will be optimally utilized by 2027. Port development is also a strategic priority because it has the potential to increase logistics flows and boost regional revenue.

“With good management, the transportation sector and the potential of Papua’s resources will drive sustainable regional economic growth,” said Ribka.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago confirmed that security conditions in Yahukimo are relatively conducive. Regional stability is considered a crucial factor in supporting the sustainability of development in Papua.

He explained that the visit fulfilled a commitment that had previously been delayed due to urgent matters in Jakarta.

He mentioned that Vice President Gibran had also noted a number of facility deficiencies that would be immediately addressed at the central level. The government ensured that findings in the field would be discussed in a cross-ministerial coordination meeting upon his arrival in Jakarta.

“He noted several deficiencies, including a report that will be finalized later in Jakarta. There will be a meeting on his return,” Djamari said.

The series of visits emphasized the government’s focus on accelerating equitable development in Papua. These efforts emphasize improving basic services, strengthening infrastructure, and maintaining security stability as the main foundations of development.

Also present during the visit were Velix Wanggai, Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Papua’s Special Autonomy Development, and Al Muktabar, Acting Secretary to the Vice President.
