Mimika, Central Papua — Amidst limited access and geographical challenges in the coastal area of Pomako, Timika, Sofyan Hadi, S.Pd., Gr., stands as a beacon of change. During his 12 years of service as an educator and principal of Pomako 1 Elementary School, he has consistently built the future of the younger generation through education.
For Sofyan, teaching is more than just a classroom routine. He transforms education into a social movement that involves the wider community. Using a simple yet touching approach, he actively communicates with parents and local residents, fostering awareness that education is a long-term investment for their children.
Despite limited facilities and infrastructure, the teaching and learning process continues. His enthusiasm inspires those around him, fostering optimism that change can start from small things, even in areas far from the center of attention.
He believes that children in coastal areas have great potential that needs to be supported with adequate access to education. He believes that the role of teachers is not only to educate but also to shape character and pave the way to a better future.
Not only focusing on education, Sofyan also shared his views on the importance of security stability in Papua. He appreciated the humanistic approach implemented in the Carstensz 2026 Peace Operation, which he believes has been able to build closer relationships between the authorities and the community.
“The approach taken through social activities, dialogue patrols, and health services has been greatly beneficial. This shows that the presence of the authorities not only maintains security but also instills a sense of security and trust,” he said.
Sofyan also urged the community to play an active role in maintaining a conducive situation and to resist being easily influenced by unverified information.
“Security and education must go hand in hand. Let’s work together to maintain peace and continue to encourage our children to attend school for a better future for Papua,” he concluded.
Sofyan Hadi’s story of service on the Pomako coast is proof that significant change can begin with the dedication of a teacher. From a simple classroom by the sea, he ignited hope for a more advanced and competitive generation of Papuans.
