Papua’s Moni Tribe Unites Through LEMASUMOPA to Champion Indigenous Welfare and Collaboration

Nabire, Central Papua – May 24, 2025 — The Moni people of Papua have taken a major step toward cultural empowerment and indigenous solidarity with the launch of LEMASUMOPA, a community-led institution dedicated to uniting Moni communities across the region. Officially registered with the Indonesian government, LEMASUMOPA aims to protect ancestral values, promote social stability, and support inclusive development in Papua.

Chairman Thomas Sondegau emphasized the organization’s role as a strategic partner for government programs and a unifying force for Moni communities scattered across Mimika, Waropen, Puncak, and beyond. Other local leaders echoed support, stating LEMASUMOPA is not a rival to existing institutions, but a bridge for collaboration and progress.

The group plans to open chapters throughout Papua and ensure indigenous voices play a central role in regional development, including access to civil service education and economic opportunities under Papua’s Special Autonomy framework.
