Ministry Accelerates Cocoa Development in Central Papua, Nabire Becomes a New Plantation Center

Nabire – The government through the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia continues to strengthen the development of the plantation sector in Central Papua by developing a cocoa area of 3,000 hectares in Nabire Regency. This program is part of the effort to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen the community economy, as well as make Central Papua one of the leading plantation centers in Indonesia.

In addition to cocoa development, the Ministry of Agriculture also carried out the expansion of coconut plantations with an area of 100 hectares, coffee development, and the arrangement of sago plants spread in a number of areas of Nabire Regency.

Director General of Plantation Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Ali Jamil Harahap, Ph.D., during a working visit to Nabire, Monday (7/6/2026), explained that the development of cocoa plantations was carried out through collaboration between the central government, local government, and the community. The provincial government, district government, and the community prepare the land, while the Ministry of Agriculture provides support in the form of superior seeds, technical assistance, and the planting process.

According to Ali Jamil Harahap, the Samabusa Village area, Teluk Kimi District, was chosen as the main location for cocoa development because it has great potential to support the increase in production of plantation commodities in Central Papua.

“In Nabire there are various plantation development programs, starting from coconut expansion of 100 hectares, cocoa rejuvenation of 1,000 hectares, cocoa expansion of 2,000 hectares, to coffee development and sago arrangement. Compared to other districts in Central Papua, Nabire is the area with the most diverse plantation development program,” said Ali Jamil Harahap.

He added, the third party appointed as the implementer of the activity has been asked to speed up the work process so that the benefits of the program can be immediately felt by the community, especially the farmers.

Through this program, the government hopes that the productivity of plantation commodities in Central Papua will continue to increase, open new jobs, strengthen the economic resilience of the community, and encourage the growth of downstream industries based on plantation products that are able to increase the added value for farmers in the Central Papua region.
