Jayapura — The Kementerian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia (Ministry of Health) is stepping up efforts to combat infectious diseases in Papua, with tuberculosis (TB) identified as a top priority. The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to reduce transmission rates and improve public health outcomes, particularly in eastern Indonesia.
Deputy Minister of Health Benjamin Paulus Octavianus stated that Indonesia continues to face a high burden of TB cases globally. This situation is also reflected in Papua, where reported cases have shown an upward trend, especially in Kabupaten Jayapura over recent months.
He emphasized that TB spreads easily, particularly within households and densely populated living environments. Therefore, the government is prioritizing early detection, ensuring patients complete their treatment, and strengthening public awareness as key measures to break the chain of transmission.
In addition to TB, the government is also reinforcing interventions against other infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and leprosy through an integrated approach. Strong coordination between central and regional governments, along with healthcare workers on the ground, is considered essential to ensure the effectiveness of these programs.
As part of a comprehensive response, the Ministry is also promoting the provision of proper housing for TB patients and vulnerable communities.
This effort aims to create healthier living conditions that support recovery while minimizing the risk of further transmission within families.
The government has set a target to eliminate TB and malaria by 2030. Achieving this goal will require cross-sector collaboration and active community participation, particularly in Papua, where challenges related to healthcare access and service distribution remain significant.
