Jayapura, Papua – The Jayapura City Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare and social protection of public transport drivers by distributing 425 operational vests and 272 Employment Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) membership cards. The assistance was symbolically handed over by Jayapura Mayor Dr. Abisai Rollo, S.H., M.H., at Entrop Terminal on Wednesday (August 5, 2026).
The operational vests were provided through a municipal grant to the Jayapura City Branch of the Indonesian Land Transportation Organization (Organda). The vests will serve as official uniforms to strengthen drivers’ identity, promote traffic discipline, and encourage more professional public transportation services.
In his remarks, Mayor Abisai Rollo said the initiative reflects the city’s appreciation for public transport drivers who play an essential role in supporting daily mobility across Jayapura.
“We are providing operational vests and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan membership cards. Through this protection, if anything unfortunate happens while they are on duty, the state is present to provide protection and ease the burden on the drivers and their beloved families,” he said.
The mayor also encouraged drivers to continue working professionally by prioritizing passenger safety, complying with traffic regulations, and delivering quality public transportation services.
During the same event, Mayor Rollo addressed the issue of long queues at several fuel stations across Jayapura. According to information from Pertamina, diesel fuel supplies in the city remain sufficient. However, lengthy queues have been caused by some vehicles modifying their fuel tanks to obtain diesel beyond the permitted capacity.
“I urge all drivers to stop modifying their fuel tanks to obtain excessive amounts of diesel. This practice clearly harms others and unnecessarily creates long queues and traffic congestion,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Mustakiem, Head of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Papua Province, welcomed the program, saying it represents an important step in expanding social security coverage for workers, particularly those in the informal sector.
“Medical expenses resulting from occupational accidents are fully covered without any cost limit. Participants are also entitled to recovery benefits, permanent disability compensation, and educational scholarships for up to two children should the worst happen,” he explained.
He added that beneficiaries are entitled to compensation of Rp42 million for non-work-related deaths, while compensation for fatalities resulting from workplace accidents reaches approximately Rp70 million, along with additional benefits in accordance with prevailing regulations.
In 2026, the Jayapura City Government has extended BPJS Ketenagakerjaan coverage to 8,701 vulnerable workers, including public transport drivers, farmers, fishermen, traders, and other informal workers. The program is supported by an allocation of approximately Rp1.5 billion, underscoring the local government’s commitment to expanding social security coverage and improving the welfare of vulnerable communities.
