Puncak Jaya, Central Papua — A gunfight between personnel of the Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2025 and an armed criminal group broke out again in Kampung Usir, Mulia District, Puncak Jaya Regency, on Thursday (15/5). Two police officers were reported killed in the incident.
The fallen officers were Police Second Brigadier Dedi Tambunan and Police Second Constable Raymon Rerey. Both were active members of the Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2025, assigned to maintain security in the Papua region.
Brigadier General of Police Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2025, accompanied by Deputy Head of Operation Chief Commissioner of Police Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., confirmed the incident. “The perpetrators are suspected to be members of an Armed Criminal Group (KKB). The victims were evacuated to Mulia Regional Hospital, but unfortunately, their lives could not be saved,” said Brigadier General Faizal.
Residents of Kampung Usir reportedly heard gunfire during the incident and described the situation as tense. In response, joint security forces immediately launched a search and pursuit operation around the area to locate the perpetrators.
Chief Commissioner of Police Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., who serves as the Head of Public Relations for the Peace Operation Cartenz 2025 Task Force, urged the local community to remain calm and not be easily provoked by unverified information.
“We call on the public to be wise in responding to circulating information and to continue supporting law enforcement efforts in maintaining a safe and secure environment,” he stated.
As of now, security forces are still conducting pursuit and area security operations in response to the incident.
