Jayapura, Papua – Papua Province boasts a unique landmark that has achieved an impressive feat, winning two awards from the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). Youtefa Bridge in Jayapura has set records for the farthest delivery of a complete steel frame and the longest installation of an intact steel bridge.
Also known as the Red Bridge (Jembatan Merah or JM), this structure is recognized as one of the most magnificent bridges in Papua. Previously referred to as Holtekamp Bridge, it connects the city of Jayapura with Kampung Hamadi and Muara Tami District. Youtefa Bridge spans a total length of 11.6 km.
The name ‘Youtefa’ is derived from a request from the local indigenous community, specifically the Nafri tribe residing around Youtefa Bay. In their language, ‘Yo’ means village, ‘te’ means go, and ‘faa’ means village. Together, it translates to “going to the village.”
Enhancing Connectivity and Community Mobility
Youtefa Bridge serves as more than just an icon; it plays a crucial role in enhancing community mobility. Before its construction, travel between Jayapura and Muara Tami took one to two hours due to the 35 km distance. Now, the bridge has shortened the travel time to just 15-30 minutes, with the distance reduced to 12 km.
Moreover, tourists and locals heading to the Border Crossings Zone (PLBN) Skouw no longer need to embark on long journeys. The trip from Jayapura to PLBN Skouw can now be completed in about 20 minutes.
This increased accessibility is expected to spur local economic growth. Farmers wishing to sell their produce at Youtefa Market will directly benefit from the bridge’s presence.
A Testament to Infrastructure Development in Papua
According to the Directorate General of Financing and Risk Management (DJPPR) of the Indonesian Ministry of Finance, the construction of Youtefa Bridge is a monumental project funded by IDR 1.3 trillion from State Sharia Securities (SBSN), along with an additional IDR 500 billion contribution from the regional budget of the Papua Province and Jayapura City. The project commenced on May 9, 2015, and was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on October 28, 2019, coinciding with the Youth Pledge Day.
President Jokowi stated that Youtefa Bridge symbolizes the development of Papua, emphasizing, “Papua must progress just like other regions in Indonesia,” highlighting his commitment to developing the land of Papua for a brighter future.
With its various advantages and vital functions, Youtefa Bridge now stands not only as a means of crossing but also as a symbol of unity and progress for the people of Papua.
