Swift State Response, Evacuation Completed Amid Grief in Remote Papua

KOROWAI, PAPUA SELATAN – Amid the grief overshadowing Papua’s remote interior, joint security personnel have made one thing clear: the safety of civilians is the top priority. This morning, the rapid response of Operation Damai Cartenz 2026 delivered results. The Korowai Batu Airstrip area was secured, and the evacuation of victims was completed on Thursday morning (February 12, 2026).

Since 06:00 WIT, personnel from the Damai Cartenz 2026 Task Force, supported by elements of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), entered the location and took control of the situation around the airstrip. The primary focus was evacuating two pioneer aircraft crew members who became victims in a shooting incident that occurred the previous day.

The Head of Operation Damai Cartenz 2026, Brig. Gen. Pol. Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, emphasized that swift measures were taken to ensure the situation did not escalate further.

“Since early morning, our personnel have secured the airstrip area and evacuated both victims to Timika. The safety of the community and regional stability remain our top priorities,” he stated.

The two bodies were flown to Timika for identification and autopsy procedures. After mortuary arrangements are completed, the remains will be transported to Jakarta and handed over to their families.

Meanwhile, all 13 passengers on board were confirmed safe. They are local residents who immediately sought shelter and have since returned to their respective homes.

The Head of Public Relations for Operation Damai Cartenz 2026, Sr. Comr. Pol. Yusuf Sutejo, stated that security efforts were carried out in coordination with TNI personnel.

“Thank God, this morning our forces successfully entered and secured the location, including the aircraft. The evacuation process has been completed. We are now focusing on sterilizing the area and ensuring the situation is fully conducive,” he said from Tanah Merah Airfield.

A total of 20 Damai Cartenz personnel were deployed to the site, reinforced by 12 Indonesian Air Force Kopasgat troops. Further coordination is ongoing with Indonesian Army units to strengthen security, considering the airstrip’s vital role in serving remote communities.

The psychological impact has also been felt by residents. Preliminary data shows that 39 civilians temporarily evacuated toward Senggo out of fear. Authorities are now working to secure the area so that residents can safely return to normal activities, including teachers and healthcare workers who serve as the backbone of public services in the region.

“Once the area is secured and declared safe, we hope displaced residents can return and public services can resume as usual,” Yusuf added.

For the time being, flights from Tanah Merah to Korowai Batu Airstrip have been suspended until conditions are declared fully safe. Based on initial findings, authorities suspect the involvement of an armed group identifying itself as the Yahukimo KKB, including factions known as the “Cannibal Battalion” and the “Red Ant Battalion,” allegedly led by Elkius Kobak. Security forces are continuing pursuit operations against those believed to be involved.

Investigations and law enforcement efforts are ongoing in a measured and professional manner. Authorities stress that the state is present not only to take action against perpetrators, but also to protect civilians and restore a sense of security.

In a remote region with limited access and basic facilities, today’s swift response underscores that the safety of Papuan communities remains a primary concern. The situation continues to be closely monitored, as joint forces work to ensure Korowai returns to calm.
