The Indonesian Pastors Association Urges the Papuan People Not to Be Provoked and Maintain Cultural Preservation

JAYAPURA, October 25, 2025 — The Indonesian Pastors Association conveys an appeal to all people in Papua to maintain peace and not be provoked by negative issues following the incident of burning Makota Cenderawasih that happened some time ago. (10/25/2025).

In their official statement, the priests emphasized that the act of burning is not justified, but must be handled wisely, calmly, and full of faith. They assessed that the event could be a reminder for all parties to care more about the preservation of nature and culture of Papua.

“As believers, we must see this event from the perspective of faith. It could be that this is God’s way to open our eyes to consciously preserve and protect Papua’s natural wealth, including the Cenderawasih bird which is a symbol of our culture,” said the representative of the Indonesian Pastors Association.

The priests also asked the government to pay more attention to the efforts to preserve animals and symbols of Papuan culture. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, traditional figures, and the community to protect the Cenderawasih bird as an icon of Papua.

“We have to stop hunting and trading Cenderawasih birds. Every cultural attribute that burns indicates the loss of valuable animal life. Therefore, let’s make this a momentum to strengthen our moral responsibility and faith,” continued the statement.

The Indonesian Pastors Association also emphasized that the public should not be easily provoked by provocations that can disrupt security and order in Papua. They invite all parties to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and make Papua a blessed land.

“This land is a land of peace, a land that God has sanctified. Let us maintain peace, unite in love, and continue to maintain peace in the Land of Papua. Lord Jesus bless us all,” concluded the statement.
