CIREBON, Indonesia — Former Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) for two consecutive terms (2010–2021) and current Mustasyar of PBNU, KH Said Aqil Siroj, has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Afan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver who died during a recent demonstration.
“May Allah accept all his good deeds, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him a place in His presence,” Said Aqil stated in his official remarks.
In addition to offering prayers, the Rector of Nahdlatul Ulama University Cirebon and President Commissioner of PT Kereta Api Indonesia called on all parties to prioritize the safety and unity of the Republic of Indonesia above all interests.
While affirming that demonstrations are a constitutional part of democracy, he emphasized the need to maintain order, avoid unrest, and uphold the rule of law. “Protests should be sincere acts of criticism, input, and recommendations for the nation’s improvement,” he said.
Addressing the government, parliament, and security forces—particularly the police—Said Aqil urged professionalism and composure in responding to public dissent. He encouraged openness to criticism and turning such moments into opportunities for reflection and reform.
He further called on Indonesians to strengthen fraternity and moral values. “We are all brothers and sisters, one nation. Let us remain optimistic in building a civilized, advanced, and dignified Indonesia,” he added.
Said Aqil reaffirmed Nahdlatul Ulama’s support for government programs while maintaining its commitment to stand with the people, especially the poor and marginalized. He expressed hope that this incident would serve as a valuable lesson for all parties to renew their sincerity in serving the nation.
“May we all draw wisdom from this event and continue to improve ourselves for the glory, unity, and safety of our beloved Indonesia,” he concluded.
