Motorcycle Taxi Driver Severely Injured in Waghete II Attack, Peace Ops Task Force Cartenz Launches Investigation

Paniai, Central Papua — A violent incident occurred in Central Papua as a motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver, Aris Munandar (28), became the victim of a brutal assault by three unidentified assailants armed with sharp weapons. The attack took place on Saturday morning (July 26, 2025) while Aris was transporting a passenger near the New Market (Pasar Baru) area of Waghete II, Tigi District, Deiyai Regency.

The victim sustained serious injuries to his shoulders and right hand and is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at the Paniai Regional General Hospital (RSUD), following initial care at Waghete II Hospital. Witnesses reported that Aris had dropped off a female passenger and greeted locals with a horn signal before being found lying unconscious and severely injured near a local kiosk.

In response to the incident, personnel from the Peace Operation Task Force Cartenz (Ops Damai Cartenz) stationed in Paniai, along with military forces, immediately visited the hospital to ensure the victim received proper care. Among those present were Bripda Kalep Matakupan, Bharaka Yanni Sialana, and Bharaka Jordan Mainassy.

Preliminary findings indicate that the attack was carried out by three perpetrators riding a single motorcycle. The assailants fled the scene shortly after committing the assault. Their identities remain unknown and are currently under investigation by the joint security forces.

The Head of Ops Damai Cartenz, Brig. Gen. Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., affirmed his team’s commitment to pursue justice for the victim and uphold law enforcement with professionalism and precision. He added that an investigation team has been deployed to determine whether the attack is linked to the armed criminal group (KKB).

“We strongly condemn this act of violence against an innocent civilian. We are taking appropriate legal steps and ensuring the victim receives the best medical care. We are also closely monitoring the security situation in the area,” stated Brig. Gen. Faizal.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations for Ops Damai Cartenz, Police Commissioner Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., urged the public to remain calm and not be swayed by rumors or unverified information. He also called on the community to assist the authorities by reporting any relevant information about the perpetrators’ whereabouts.

“We urge everyone to stay vigilant and help maintain a peaceful atmosphere. If anyone has information, no matter how small, please report it to the authorities. Community involvement is vital in ensuring security,” he said.

As of now, the victim remains in the operating room and has not been able to provide a statement. Ops Damai Cartenz continues to oversee the victim’s recovery process and is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
