Jakarta – Indonesia’s Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, has pledged to increase the number of specialist doctors assigned to Jayapura Regional General Hospital (RSUD Jayapura) in Papua to improve the quality of healthcare services in the region.
Minister Budi stated that the medical equipment at the hospital is already adequate.
“The equipment at RSUD Jayapura is already quite good. What we need now is to add more specialist doctors,” said Minister Budi, as quoted by Antara on Saturday (July 5, 2025).
He added that the Ministry of Health would send experienced doctors from Jakarta to conduct training and handle specific medical cases in Jayapura.
In the meantime, the shortage of specialist doctors in Jayapura will be addressed by bringing in medical personnel from government-owned hospitals elsewhere.
“To overcome the shortage of specialists, we will temporarily fill those positions with personnel from other government hospitals,” he added.
Moreover, Budi emphasized that the recruitment of new medical personnel will prioritize healthcare workers from Papua.
He affirmed that once RSUD Jayapura operates optimally, people from the six provinces across the Papua region will no longer need to be referred to hospitals outside the island.
“Currently, many Papuan patients are still referred to Makassar. In the future, all treatments will be handled here. The specialists and equipment are already available. I will continue sending senior doctors here for training purposes,” Minister Budi concluded.
