Jayawijaya Library Department Boosts Reading Culture Among Students in Papua Highlands

Wamena, Papua Highlands, Indonesia – The Library and Archives Office (Dispersip) of Jayawijaya Regency is intensifying efforts to promote reading habits among students and university attendees, aiming to enhance knowledge and literacy in the region.

Primus Oagay, Head of Jayawijaya Dispersip, stated that formal letters have been sent to educational institutions—from kindergartens to high schools and vocational schools—encouraging them to utilize books available at the local public library.

“Currently, our library operates within the regent’s office. Students, university members, and even the general public are welcome to visit during working hours,” Oagay explained on Saturday (18/11).

He acknowledged that the new library building, which also houses the Dispersip office, has seen low visitor numbers due to limited public awareness. In contrast, the old building previously recorded around 2,000 student visits last year.

“We hope that through outreach and official notices, more students will come to explore our collection,” he added.

The regional library currently holds approximately 3,000 book titles, covering various subjects, including education, general knowledge, politics, cookbooks, and folklore. “These resources are open to all community members as a foundation for present and future learning,” Oagay emphasized.

He stressed that reading broadens intellectual horizons, assuring that the library’s collection is comprehensive enough to support learners at all levels. “We invite students and researchers to visit regularly on weekdays,” he concluded.

This initiative reflects Jayawijaya’s commitment to fostering a knowledge-driven society through accessible public literacy resources.
