Armed Clash Between Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2025 and Egianus Kogoya Armed Group in Wamena, One Armed Criminal Group (KKB) Member Killed

Jayawijaya — One member of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB), allegedly a subordinate of Egianus Kogoya, was killed in a gunfight with the Law Enforcement Unit of Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz in Pugima Village, Welalelama District, Jayawijaya Regency, Highland Papua, on Monday evening (June 9).

The Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2025, Brigadier General of Police Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., accompanied by Deputy Head of Peace Operation Cartenz, Chief Commissioner of Police Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., confirmed the incident. He explained that the gunfight occurred on Monday at approximately 18:36 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), when a patrol team from the Law Enforcement Unit (Satgas Gakkum) was fired upon from the front-left direction of their vehicle. The officers immediately returned fire.

“The Law Enforcement Team, followed by the Tactical Task Force (Satgas Tindak) coming from the Kurima landslide route, conducted a blockade toward the Pugima Bypass Road. At around 21:18 WIT, another firefight took place between Law Enforcement Team 2, led by Police Adjunct Commissioner Budi Basra, and approximately seven KKB members in the area of Maima Village, Asotipo District,” said Brig. Gen. Faizal Ramadhani.

During the exchange of fire, one KKB member was reported killed and found having fallen into a ravine. The body was then evacuated to Wamena Regional Public Hospital (RSUD Wamena) for identification. Although the identity is still being verified, it is strongly suspected that the deceased was one of Egianus Kogoya’s men.

“Based on preliminary identification, the deceased is believed to be a member of the KKB group led by Egianus Kogoya. This assumption is based on matching physical characteristics, facial features, clothing, and visual documentation previously circulated showing him with Egianus Kogoya. We are still conducting further verification,” Brig. Gen. Faizal added.

Evidence recovered from the scene includes one handy talky (HT), one Vivo Y17 mobile phone, and one packet of dried marijuana. The individual is also suspected to be a repeat offender in marijuana-related narcotics cases.

It is estimated that the KKB group involved in this incident numbered around 15 individuals, armed with seven long-barreled rifles and one short-barreled firearm.

The Egianus Kogoya group has been actively involved in a series of armed violent acts throughout 2025 in the Jayawijaya region. The following are records of some of their criminal activities:

February 1, 2025: Shooting of Police Officer Aiptu Syam in Kurima District.

May 17, 2025: Assault on the Kurima Military Subdistrict Command (Koramil).

May 27, 2025: Shooting of Jayawijaya Traffic Police Officer Chief Police Brigadier Marsidon Debataraja, causing injury in Wamena City.

June 4, 2025: Shooting of two civilians, Rahmat Hidayat and Saepudin, in Air Garam Village.

June 5, 2025: Gunfire directed at Kurima Police Sector (Polsek Kurima).

Meanwhile, Chief Commissioner of Police Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., Head of Public Relations for Operation Peace Cartenz, stated that security forces continue to intensify patrols and law enforcement efforts to prevent any escalation of armed conflict in the Central Highlands of Papua.

“We are continuing to increase the intensity of patrols and carry out measured and targeted law enforcement actions to ensure the situation remains stable and to prevent the escalation of armed conflict in the Central Highlands,” he concluded.
