NABIRE – A total of 20 inmates escaped from Class IIb Prison in Nabire, Central Papua Province, on Monday (June 2, 2025), after forcing their way past prison guards at the main entrance.
According to initial reports, the breakout occurred around 11:20 AM local time (WIT). Video footage shows one inmate leading the escape by charging first.
The inmate was seen holding a sharp object resembling a machete, approximately 50 cm long. He swung the weapon at a guard, who then fled to avoid injury. Another guard tried to intervene but was also attacked and sustained injuries to his hand.
The assailant then managed to escape, followed by several other inmates.
As of 2:03 PM WIT, the prison area had been secured by authorities. Dozens of police personnel were deployed to control the situation.
The motive behind the mass escape remains unclear. This is the second inmate escape incident from Nabire Prison within the past month.
