Jakarta – The forum consisting of members of the DPR (House of Representatives) and DPD (Regional Representative Council) from Papua, known as FOR Papua MPR, has proposed that the government cease employing security-based approaches by deploying TNI and Polri personnel to address the ongoing conflict in Papua

Deputy Chairperson of the DPD, Yorrys Raweyai, stated that this suggestion was made in response to the recent armed conflict situation. He believes that the presence of security forces in Papua has not been able to de-escalate tensions and has instead increased the number of casualties, including both security personnel and civilians.

Yorrys emphasized that the conflict in Papua is not a new issue, having persisted for nearly seventy years. He highlighted that the root cause is not solely related to development or economic factors, but more importantly involves political issues that require serious attention.

He also stressed that all parties need to share a common understanding when formulating solutions to resolve the conflict in Bumi Cenderawasih. Furthermore, he suggested that President Prabowo Subianto should take firm steps to resolve the matter, allowing Papuan legislators who have networks with separatist groups to play a role.

Additionally, Yorrys pointed out the emergence of refugee problems and the uncertainty faced by residents in several Papua regions as critical indicators that the central government must pay attention to. He hopes that the strategies currently in place will be critically evaluated to produce more effective and humane solutions.
