Message of Peace from Chief of the Wikaya Tribe: Reject Hoaxes, Maintain Public Order in Papua

Keerom, May 12, 2025 – Herman Yoku, the High Chief of the Wikaya Tribe, has called on the people of Papua—including the five newly formed autonomous regions—to work together in preserving public safety and order (kamtibmas) and to reject the growing spread of hoaxes.

“As Indonesian citizens, let’s stand together to maintain peace and public order, and to fight the spread of hoaxes that are trending across the country, especially here in Papua,” said Herman Yoku when met in Arso, Keerom Regency, on Monday (May 12).

He stressed that false news or hoaxes can trigger unrest and division among communities. That’s why, he said, it is important for people to be more discerning when consuming and sharing information, especially on social media.

“Avoid all misinformation, because it can drag us into chaos or create problems for ourselves,” he warned.

Yoku also urged all Papuan communities to uphold unity and not be easily provoked by unverified news. He expressed hope that citizens will act wisely and responsibly to keep their communities peaceful and secure.
