Criticism of KKB’s Presence by Human Rights Organizations

Papua – Several human rights organizations (HROs) have raised critical voices against the presence of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Papua Province. Kidnappings, coercion, and violence perpetrated by the KKB have deeply concerned HROs about the violations of human rights occurring.

In an official statement, Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, emphatically condemned the presence of the KKB and actions that violate human rights. “Strong law enforcement is necessary to bring justice to the victims and stop KKB crimes,” Usman stressed.

This criticism sheds important light on the negative impact caused by the KKB on the Papuan community. In addition to demanding robust law enforcement, HROs also advocate for the protection of basic rights for Papuan citizens who have fallen victim to KKB actions.

However, this criticism is accompanied by a profound understanding of the complexity of the situation in Papua. Some KKB members may join due to social pressures, economic hardships, or unstable environmental conditions. Therefore, efforts to prevent new recruitment and social reintegration for KKB members willing to change are also crucial parts of the long-term solution.

The commitment of HROs to voice justice and human rights in Papua is a crucial point in maintaining a balance between strong law enforcement and empowering communities to address the root of the KKB problem. Collaboration among the government, HROs, and the community is key to building a peaceful and just Papua for all its citizens.
