World Noken Day, Papua Provincial Government Encourages Use of Noken in All Official Activities

Jayapura — Every year on December 4, the world celebrates World Noken Day, a moment dedicated to commemorating the recognition of the Papuan Noken as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This traditional handcrafted item has been officially listed as part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage since 2012.

Acting Regional Secretary of Papua, Christian Sohilait, stated that all regencies and cities across Papua now acknowledge the Noken as a significant element of global cultural heritage. This recognition is reflected in the increasing use of Noken in various government activities, including during the reception of official guests.

“We value the Noken as a world cultural heritage, and therefore I urge all OPD Heads to use Noken as an accessory during seminars, trainings, and similar events,” he said.

He further noted that the regional government continues to provide opportunities and spaces for mama-mama Papua whose livelihoods depend on Noken production and sales.

“I encourage that in every available moment we use the Noken, as this also supports the economic empowerment of mama-mama who sell Noken,” he added.

Christian also called on the Papuan community to keep using Noken in their daily activities and to purchase Noken made by mama-mama Papua as a way to preserve local culture while strengthening community-based economic growth.
