Papua — Papuan traditional leader Yanto Eluay reminds the public that December 1 should be understood as World AIDS Day, a global moment dedicated to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS — not an opportunity to spark political issues that could create division.
Yanto emphasized that the people of Papua should use the date to strengthen solidarity and promote health education.
“December 1 is an important day for global health campaigns. We must focus on protecting the next generation of Papuans from HIV/AIDS, not be swayed by misleading agendas,” he said.
According to Yanto, HIV/AIDS remains a serious challenge in several parts of Papua, making this international observance a collective reminder to reinforce prevention efforts, expand access to testing, and support people living with HIV without stigma.
He also called on local governments, medical workers, traditional leaders, youth groups, and community organizations to join forces in spreading accurate information and encouraging unity.
“This is a day for compassion, not division. Let’s make December 1 a moment to protect lives and safeguard the future of the Papuan people,” he stressed.
