Jayapura — The Papua Provincial Government has reiterated the urgency of accelerating the development of health facilities across the region. Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri has urged the Ministry of Health to speed up the completion of several ongoing healthcare projects in various districts and cities.
The request was conveyed during Fakhiri’s meeting with Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin in Jakarta on Friday (Nov. 14). He explained that a number of health facility projects funded by the government remain far behind schedule, requiring immediate intervention from the central authorities.
Among the projects considered urgent is the construction of Keerom Hospital, valued at more than Rp122 billion, but whose progress has only reached about 50 percent. In addition, the development of Public Health Laboratories (Labkesmas) in Jayapura District and Keerom—each funded with Rp15 billion—also remains in the early stages.
Fakhiri also highlighted the planned construction of Rodofabo Hospital in Waropen and Mamberamo Raya Hospital, both estimated to require investments in the hundreds of billions of rupiah. He stated that these facilities are crucial to expanding access to healthcare, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
Beyond infrastructure, the Governor also proposed the procurement of advanced medical equipment such as MRI machines, CT scanners, EEG devices, and neurosurgery microscopes to strengthen services at referral hospitals in Papua. He further suggested upgrading Abepura Regional Hospital (RSUD Abepura) into a specialized referral center for maternal, pediatric, and pulmonary infectious disease services, given the rising number of patients in need.
Despite the delays in several projects, Fakhiri expressed appreciation for those that have been completed, including Jayapura Central General Hospital (RSUP Jayapura) and Supiori Hospital. He emphasized that unfinished projects must be prioritized and completed no later than 2026 to ensure they can immediately benefit the public.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin assured that all proposals from the Papua Provincial Government will be reviewed and followed up in line with national policy. The acceleration of health infrastructure development is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare access and strengthening human resource quality in eastern Indonesia.
