WAMENA, Papua — An atmosphere of emotion and hope filled the declaration held in Wamena, Papua, on November 10, 2025, when Arius Tabuni, a former Field Commander (Danlap) of Kodap II Muaragame of the Free Papua Movement (OPM), publicly expressed his commitment to loyalty to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). This step marks a significant milestone in the reconciliation and peace efforts in Papua.
In his speech, Arius revealed that his decision to join Kodap II in 2016 was driven by a desire to continue his father’s struggle. However, after nearly a decade of conflict, he realized that armed resistance only brought suffering and division among the Papuan people. Through this acknowledgment, he chose to leave violence behind and join NKRI for a better future for the children and youth of Papua.
“I have about thirty subordinates. I have no regrets joining NKRI. To my fellow fighters and friends, I invite you to follow this path, because there is wisdom and hope in it,” he stated confidently.
Arius then recited a loyalty pledge, which outlined his commitment to obey and remain loyal to NKRI based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. He emphasized that he would abandon all forms of armed struggle and fully support the government’s efforts to develop Papua.
“I pledge to abandon all forms of armed resistance and support the government’s efforts to build a more prosperous and advanced Papua,” he declared.
Not only that, Arius also expressed his sincere desire to preserve and uphold Papuan cultural values as part of ongoing peacebuilding efforts.
“I am committed to supporting peaceful resolution efforts and safeguarding Papuan customs and traditions, so that Papua can become a peaceful and prosperous land,” he added.
The declaration concluded with an emotional rallying cry, “I am Papua, I am Indonesia,” which echoed among the attendees and the community present. The words symbolize unity and new hope for Papua’s future.
Arius’s move represents an important momentum in the reconciliation process in Papua. It is hoped that his example will inspire other armed groups to lay down their weapons, return to the fold of NKRI, and collaboratively build a peaceful, progressive, and sovereign Papua.
