BBKSDA Papua Issues Apology for the Burning of Crown of the Bird of Paradise from Seized Items

Several residents of Boven Digoel, South Papua, staged a protest against the method used by BBKSDA Papua to destroy the crown of the bird of paradise, which was done by burning.

In the demonstration, residents emphasized that the crown of the bird of paradise is an important symbol for Papuan communities and is often used in various traditional ceremonies and sacred rituals. Therefore, they believe that burning the crown is inappropriate.

Boven Digoel Regent, Roni Omba, also called on the community not to be overly provoked and reminded everyone of the importance of maintaining order and refraining from reckless or violent actions.

Previously, a video circulated showing the process of destroying the bird of paradise crown at the BBKSDA Papua office in Jayapura City. The destruction was part of efforts to eliminate seized crowns obtained during operations targeting illegal plant and animal trade and forestry crimes in Papua.

The South Papua People’s Assembly (Majelis Rakyat Papua Selatan) expressed regret over the burning of the bird of paradise crown. They argued that there are still alternative ways to handle seized items that respect Papuan cultural traditions.

The Head of the Big Conservation Agency (Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam) of Papua officially apologized to the people of Papua for the act of destroying the bird of paradise crown. They clarified that the measure was solely aimed at enforcing the law and breaking the chain of illegal trade in protected wildlife, without any intention to disrespect Papuan cultural values and identity.
