Jayapura – The Papua Provincial Government, through the Office of Food Crops, Horticulture, and Food, continues to encourage farmers to innovate and adopt modern farming systems.
The increase in agricultural production is expected not only to meet the food needs of local communities but also to strengthen food security in Papua.
“Increasing agricultural output will not only fulfill consumption needs but also has the potential to contribute to Papua Province’s locally generated revenue (PAD),” said Acting Head of the Office of Food Crops, Horticulture, and Food of Papua Province, Lunanka V.M.L Daimboa.
He explained that optimal agricultural results would improve farmers’ exchange rates, thereby enhancing their welfare. To support this effort, the government is boosting the production of seeds, both for food crops and horticultural commodities.
This initiative is also aligned with President Prabowo’s Asta Cita program, which aims for national food self-sufficiency. Through its seed-producing Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD), the Food Crops Office is expected to make a tangible contribution to increasing Papua’s PAD.
The locally produced seeds will later be distributed not only within Papua Province but also to other regions, including Central Papua, South Papua, Highland Papua, and West Papua.
“By increasing the production of local seeds, we can reduce reliance on supplies from outside Papua. Moreover, seeds produced here are better suited to Papua’s climate,” he emphasized.
He further expressed hope that, moving forward, Papuan farmers would achieve greater prosperity through higher productivity, fair market access, and stable pricing, enabling agriculture to truly become the primary source of household income for farming families.
