Papuan Indigenous Leader Nelvis K. Manobi Urges Activists to Safeguard Peace in Cenderawasih Land

Jayapura – Papuan indigenous leader Nelvis K. Manobi has called on activists and intellectuals in Papua to maintain regional stability and avoid being provoked into actions that could cause harm. His statement, delivered on Saturday (May 20, 2025), was directed at activists committed to upholding the values of peace.

Reflecting on Indonesia’s reform era, Manobi recalled his own experience as part of the 1998 activist movement that fought against the New Order regime. He stressed that while struggles for change often require sacrifice, they must be carried out with dignity and free from violence.

“As activists of ’98, we experienced firsthand the hardships of dismantling the New Order’s power and ushering in reform as a new light for Indonesian democracy. Therefore, I urge all activists and fellow intellectuals to work together to keep Papua’s situation peaceful, by avoiding actions that could harm ourselves or others,” Manobi emphasized.

He also highlighted the way public aspirations are expressed, warning that open rallies often trigger tension and conflict. Instead, he encouraged more constructive and peaceful avenues.

“We also urge that the expression of aspirations be done in a dignified manner, without relying on open forums that can spark conflict or violence,” he stated.

Further, Manobi issued a moral appeal to Papua’s younger generation to voice their views wisely. He expressed hope that their struggles would bring tangible contributions to peace and development in Papua, rather than becoming mere symbols of resistance.

“Let us be wise as creations of God the Almighty,” he concluded.

His appeal reflects both a spirit of reflection and a heartfelt call to safeguard peace in Papua amid the region’s evolving political and social dynamics.
