Jayapura – Amid growing political tensions and demonstrations demanding the dissolution of parliament, the Papua Regional Board of the Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (DPD GAMKI Papua) has taken a different stance. In an official statement on Sunday (August 31, 2025), Chairman Luis Mebri stressed one central message: peace is the best path forward.
Mebri affirmed that expressing aspirations is a fundamental right in a democracy. However, he reminded the public that such expression must be conducted with dignity and without sparking unrest.
“Papua is our shared home. Let us nurture it with peace,” Mebri declared with firm hope.
The call came in response to a series of demonstrations in several regions that escalated into tragic incidents—ranging from loss of life to the burning of local parliament offices. GAMKI Papua also extended its deepest condolences and invited the public to reflect on the true direction of their struggle: whether it is genuinely for justice or if it risks undermining social order.
In its statement, GAMKI Papua presented 14 points for peace. Among the key messages were: delivering aspirations in a respectful manner, recognizing security officers as part of the community, upholding unity despite political differences, and promoting open dialogue between citizens and members of the Papuan People’s Council (DPRP).
As a concrete step, the organization proposed a Coffee Morning program that would bring together student leaders, youth organizations, traditional figures, religious leaders, and women representatives—a platform for dialogue designed to maintain a conducive environment.
Concluding its appeal, GAMKI Papua reaffirmed that Papua is a land of peace. For the organization, this is not mere political rhetoric but a moral call for all elements of society to place love and brotherhood at the foundation of their common struggle.
