Jayapura – The planned candlelight vigil organized by the United Alliance of Two-Wheel Associations (Garda) Papua Province to honor victims who died during a peaceful demonstration in Jakarta has been officially canceled.
Action Coordinator Dimas stated that the decision was made after careful consideration of the current security and public order situation in Papua.
“To avoid any unwanted incidents, I, as the action coordinator, officially declare that no activities will be carried out in the name of Garda Papua—whether a candlelight vigil or any other event,” Dimas said in an official statement on Saturday evening.
He further explained that the decision applies not only to the planned vigil that evening but also to similar activities in the future. The announcement, he added, was made to ensure that all communities affiliated with Garda Papua clearly understand the cancellation.
Dimas emphasized that the move reflects Garda Papua’s responsibility to maintain peace and ensure that Jayapura, and Papua more broadly, remain safe and conducive.
