Chairman of Gembala Papua Calls on All Communities to Safeguard Papua

Jayapura (30/08/2025) – Chairman of the Forum for Defending the Rights of Indigenous Papuans (Gembala Papua), Othis Suwae, urged activists, student organizations, community leaders, and all elements of Papuan society to exercise restraint and avoid staging demonstrations that could spark unrest. He warned that both the national and local situations remain fragile and may be exploited by certain groups.

In his statement, Suwae stressed the importance of vigilance so that Papuan communities are not provoked by external actors. “If we let our guard down, if conditions are manipulated and we are pushed into the streets, I believe violence will be unavoidable,” he said.

Suwae highlighted the risks of uncontrolled demonstrations, which he believes could be infiltrated by outside parties and escalate into chaos. He called on activists and the wider public to avoid falling into situations that could worsen tensions.

As a young Papuan leader, Suwae noted that his group has closely observed the unfolding social and political dynamics. He described the current situation as dangerous and requiring patience and wise judgment from all parties.

“Let us safeguard Papua so peace remains. Our fathers, mothers, and families must be able to earn a living freely, especially when the economy is already under strain,” he urged.

Suwae also appealed to traditional leaders, church figures, tribal chiefs, youth, and women to unite in maintaining security across Papua. He expressed hope that all elements of society would show restraint to prevent conflict.

“Let us be wise, prudent, and remain patient. May God help us all,” he concluded.
