Papua Election Commission Prepares for Court Dispute Over Repeat Gubernatorial Vote

Jayapura, Papua – The Papua Provincial General Elections Commission (KPU Papua) is preparing evidence and documentation for the Constitutional Court (MK) as it faces a legal challenge to the results of the repeat gubernatorial election (PSU) held on 6 August 2025.

The dispute was filed by candidate pair Benhur Tomi Mano and Constan Karma (BTM–CK) through their legal counsel, Anthon Raharusun, who alleged irregularities during the voting process. The case was formally registered with the Constitutional Court under Electronic Case Filing Number 22/PAN.MK/e-AP3/08/2025 on Wednesday, August 28, 2025.

KPU Papua Chair Diana Simbiak said her office is coordinating with eight district and one city election committee to compile timelines and gather supporting evidence. “We are coordinating with our regional offices to prepare the chronology and collect materials so we will be ready for the Constitutional Court hearings,” she told reporters at the KPU Papua office in Jayapura on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Simbiak emphasized that KPU Papua would follow all legal mechanisms and respect regulations. She noted that the BTM–CK pair has been given three days to revise and complete their petition. “We will wait and respond in accordance with the law,” she said, adding that KPU Papua respects the judicial process and any final ruling issued by the Constitutional Court.

She also urged supporters of both candidate pairs to remain calm and avoid provocation while awaiting the Court’s decision.

Meanwhile, lawyer Anthon Raharusun confirmed that the case has been formally recorded in the Court’s electronic filing system and will proceed under Constitutional Court Regulation No. 3/2024 concerning procedures for electoral disputes in gubernatorial, regent, and mayoral elections.
