Awaiting Constitutional Court Ruling, Papuans Urged to Beware of Identity Politics

Jayapura – The Repeat Election (PSU) for Papua’s gubernatorial race has concluded with strong voter participation. The democratic process now moves into the next phase: the electoral dispute currently being reviewed by the Constitutional Court (MK) in Jakarta.

Papuan activist Marinus Yaung emphasized that although the official results have yet to be determined, the public should remain committed to peace, social harmony, and resist provocations, particularly those involving sensitive ethnic or religious issues.

“We have cast our votes. Now let’s respond to the outcome with maturity. For those dissatisfied, there are legal avenues available. There is no need to stir conflict on the streets or on social media,” Marinus said.

He stressed that peace must be preserved regardless of the Constitutional Court’s decision. “Having different political preferences is normal. But it must not damage the bonds of tolerance that have long been the strength of Papua’s society,” he added.

Marinus also warned that the post-election atmosphere could be exploited by irresponsible groups to incite division through identity-based provocations. He called on all faith communities to maintain healthy communication and refrain from spreading hateful narratives.

“We are brothers and sisters. A difference in political choice should not destroy interfaith relations. Every religion teaches peace,” the activist underscored.

According to Marinus, this moment represents a test of democratic maturity for the people of Papua. “Elections may be heated, but afterward we must return to calm. Democracy grows stronger when its people act wisely,” he concluded.

With tolerance and mutual respect, Papua’s communities are expected to navigate this post-election period peacefully until the Constitutional Court delivers its final ruling.
