Papua, Monday (Aug. 25, 2025) – Papuan religious leader Ustaz Ismail Asso has called on the public to stop spreading provocations and misleading information on social media, warning that such actions could trigger division in Papua.
In his statement, Ustaz Ismail emphasized that all issues—including political disputes such as regional elections—should be resolved through Indonesia’s legal mechanisms. “If we are dissatisfied with the election commission’s decision, evidence should be submitted to the Constitutional Court. Do not spread it on social media, as it could spark tensions on the ground,” he said.
He reminded people that Papua has already suffered too many casualties from conflict and disharmony, stressing that peace and harmony must come first. “Every human life is precious in the eyes of God. We must not let differences in religion or background turn us into enemies. That is not right, because all human beings are God’s noble creation,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of interfaith tolerance, Ustaz Ismail noted that in Islam, all human beings descend from Adam and are created in purity. Environment and upbringing, he said, shape one’s faith. “Faith is deeply personal and must be respected. Political disputes should never be dragged into the realm of religion,” he said.
On local politics, Ustaz Ismail reminded communities that security officers and leaders in Papua serve all people, not just certain groups. He urged both campaign teams and supporters to exercise restraint and avoid divisive behavior.
“I am your brother, and those who are not Muslims are also my brothers. We are one big family in Papua. Do not let religious or political differences tear us apart,” Ustaz Ismail Asso concluded.
