Papua MUI Chairman KH. Syaiful Islam Al Payage Urges Public to Safeguard Security After Papua Gubernatorial Re-Vote

Jayapura – Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Papua, KH. Syaiful Islam Al Payage, has urged the public to maintain security and order following the Papua gubernatorial election re-vote (PSU). He stressed that safety and stability are fundamental for daily life to function normally.

“If there is no security and order, it will be impossible for us to trade, study, or work in offices. That is why security must come first,” KH. Syaiful said in Jayapura on Tuesday (Aug 20).

He reminded citizens not to be divided by political differences in an election held only once every five years. “We must not let the election tear us apart. Brotherhood among Papuans is essential, and it must be preserved at all times,” he emphasized.

According to him, maintaining security is not only the duty of the police and military, but also a shared responsibility of all community members, religious leaders, and stakeholders in Papua. He called on all parties to unite their hearts and respect differences.

“Differences are a certainty, and different political choices are inevitable. The winners should not be arrogant, and the losers should not lose heart. Victory or defeat is only part of the process; before God, what matters is piety, not the election results,” he said.

KH. Syaiful added that religious leaders play a crucial role in calming communities and ensuring social harmony. He expressed hope that Papuan society will remain united, respectful, and committed to peace for a better future of the region.
