Chairman of Papua Grand Mosque, KH. Kahar Yelipele, Urges Public to Uphold Peace After Papua Gubernatorial Re-Vote

Jayapura – Chairman of the Papua Grand Mosque, KH. Kahar Yelipele, has called on the public to maintain peace following the Papua Gubernatorial Election re-vote (PSU). He emphasized that whatever result is announced by the General Elections Commission (KPU) should be accepted sincerely as part of Allah’s divine decree.

“For Allah, granting victory to anyone is very easy. Disasters, trials, and the outcomes of our efforts have all been written in His decree. The question is whether we can accept it with sincerity and contentment,” KH. Kahar said in Jayapura on Tuesday (Aug 20).

He reminded the public not to be provoked by political elites seeking to exploit ordinary citizens. “We are elders, not people who easily join demonstrations. Do not allow yourselves to be used as tools of political interests. Too much time—and even lives—have been lost for matters that do not truly belong to us,” he stressed.

According to him, preserving interfaith unity is the foundation of stability and security in Papua. He noted that every religion commands its followers to uphold peace. In Christianity, the Ten Commandments serve as a moral compass, while in Islam, the Qur’an’s Surah Al-Hujurat verse 13 affirms that humans are created diverse so they may know one another and live in faith and piety.

“Allah dislikes arrogance and self-pride. Therefore, religious leaders must stand at the forefront, reminding communities to preserve brotherhood and harmony in this beloved land of Papua,” he said.

With this appeal, KH. Kahar expressed hope that post-election, Papuan society will not fall into conflict but instead work together to safeguard peace for a brighter future of the region.
