Jayapura – The atmosphere in Papua remains tense yet hopeful following the repeat election (PSU) for Governor and Deputy Governor on August 6, 2025. In the midst of political dynamics, Secretary of the Papua Labor Party Exco, Petrus Daunema, has called on the public to rebuild harmony and live peacefully together.
For Petrus, a safe and peaceful Papua is the foundation for building the future. He emphasized that unity among ethnic groups, races, and religions must continue to be nurtured on the island.
“Maintaining security is not only the responsibility of the authorities. It is our collective duty,” he stated.
He also reminded the public not to be provoked by groups attempting to stir tensions. Differences in political choices, he said, are simply part of democracy and should not divide society.
“We hope repeat elections will not happen again, because they only delay development and burden the people,” Petrus stressed.
Beyond security, Petrus raised concerns about the misuse of social media as a channel for spreading misinformation. He urged the public to be more cautious before believing or sharing unverified information, particularly when it involves sensitive issues.
“If there is information that seems doubtful, verify it with the authorities first,” he advised.
Petrus concluded his statement with a simple yet meaningful appeal: to accept the results of the repeat election and move forward together for a more prosperous Papua over the next five years.
