Papua – In commemoration of the 80th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, the Directorate of Water and Air Police (Polairud) of the Papua Regional Police held an underwater flag-raising ceremony in the waters of Jayapura, Papua. This unique event served as a tribute to the nation’s heroes while also aiming to foster a sense of nationalism among the public, especially in Papua’s coastal communities.
The flag was hoisted solemnly at a depth of 15 meters below sea level. The ceremony was carried out by a team of divers consisting of personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and members of the local diving community in Jayapura City. All participants wore full diving gear while still observing the formal procedures of a ceremonial flag-raising—albeit underwater.
This event stood out as a symbol of collaboration between security forces and the community in celebrating Independence Day in a creative and meaningful way. Beyond honoring the nation, the ceremony also highlighted the importance of preserving marine ecosystems as a valuable national treasure that must be protected.
Through this activity, the Papua Water and Air Police hope to raise public awareness about marine conservation while strengthening the spirit of unity and togetherness in Papua. The underwater flag-raising ceremony represents the idea that the spirit of independence is not only celebrated on land, but across the entire archipelago — including in the rich and beautiful depths of Papua’s seas.
