Papuan Religious Leader: Ethnic and Religious Differences Should Not Divide Unity

Jakarta — Papuan religious leader Rev. Benny Bernard Arnlodo Narahalefaan has called on Indonesians to safeguard unity and foster a peaceful atmosphere ahead of the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17, 2025.

Speaking on Friday (Aug. 16), Benny represented 28 NGOs under the Papua Humanitarian Solidarity Secretariat, urging communities both in Papua and Jakarta to welcome the national celebration in a safe, calm, and productive manner.

“We are all part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Let us build harmony that leads to peace and stand united as one nation. There should be no division, even if we come from different religions, ethnicities, or races,” he said.

Benny also emphasized the importance of strengthening bonds of brotherhood ahead of the independence commemoration. He encouraged all levels of society—from parents to the younger generation—to contribute to maintaining a conducive atmosphere.

“Let us prepare ourselves together to celebrate Indonesia’s 80th birthday. We are united in the love that God has given, for a more peaceful and prosperous Indonesia,” he added.
