Papuan Religious Leader Urges Calm Ahead of Papua Gubernatorial Election Recount Decision

Jayapura – Prominent Papuan Muslim leader, Dr. H. Toni Wanggai, has called on religious leaders and community figures to help maintain public calm ahead of the official announcement of the Papua gubernatorial election re-vote (PSU) results by the Papua General Election Commission (KPU) on August 16, 2025.

In his remarks, Dr. Wanggai expressed regret over a recent demonstration held on August 11 in front of the Papua Governor’s Office, where supporters and religious figures reportedly voiced racially charged and provocative statements that he warned could create divisions among faith communities.

He stressed that religious leaders should use pulpits to deliver messages of peace and harmony, fostering stability and social order during this politically sensitive period.

Responding to concerns about alleged electoral fraud, Dr. Wanggai emphasized that the electoral process must be entrusted to the election organizers—KPU, Bawaslu, security authorities, and the campaign teams of each candidate—to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability. He also noted that in the digital era, the public can closely monitor the entire process.

The former member of the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) Religious Working Group further urged citizens to accept whoever is elected as Papua’s next governor. “That is God’s will. We are all brothers and sisters, and we must pray that the incoming governor’s leadership will bring peace and prosperity to the people of Papua,” he said.
