Papuan Academic Urges Vigilance Against Hoaxes After Election

Jayapura — Papuan academic Dr. Alfius Aninam, S.Th., M.Pd., has urged all Papuans to remain calm and avoid being provoked by issues that could undermine unity following the re-vote in the Papua gubernatorial election (Aug. 15, 2025).

In his official statement, Dr. Aninam stressed the importance of maturity and wisdom in navigating the current political dynamics. He called on all segments of society — from traditional leaders and youth to ordinary citizens — to steer clear of conflict-driven narratives that could damage the long-standing social and cultural order in Papua.

“I urge all Papuans to remain calm and avoid creating unrest that could harm our unity. We must all respect the democratic process, and political differences should never become a reason to tear each other down,” Dr. Aninam said.

He also raised concerns over the surge of information circulating on social media after the re-vote, noting the need for caution. According to him, hoaxes or false news carry a high risk of creating public anxiety and sparking horizontal conflict within communities.

“Don’t believe every piece of information you see on social media right away. We must be smart in distinguishing between truth and provocation. Hoaxes can destroy the harmony we’ve worked so hard to build,” he emphasized.

Dr. Aninam further encouraged the community to strengthen solidarity and uphold local values that prioritize dialogue and consensus. He highlighted Papua’s rich cultural heritage rooted in peace, which should serve as a guiding principle during sensitive political situations.

“Papua is a land of peace. Let us protect it with calm hearts and clear minds. Don’t let fleeting emotions ruin our future,” he concluded.
