Papua – In celebration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, the people of Nabire were treated not only to festive competitions and ceremonies, but also to free cataract surgeries and eye check-ups provided by PT Freeport Indonesia in collaboration with the Central Papua Provincial Government.
This year’s Independence Day celebration in Nabire, Central Papua, held special meaning as PT Freeport Indonesia partnered with the Central Papua Provincial Government, Nabire Regency Government, the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association (Perdami) Papua, Nabire Regional Hospital (RSUD Nabire), and the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation to provide free cataract surgeries for local residents.
In addition, 1,043 students received eye education and check-ups, while 487 students were given free eyeglasses as part of the Independence Day celebration.
Central Papua Governor Meki Nawipa stated that this year’s celebration was marked by social initiatives that delivered real benefits to the community.
He expressed hope that such initiatives could become a tradition in every Independence Day celebration in Central Papua.
Claus Wamafma, Director and Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development at PT Freeport Indonesia, explained that each year the company strives to commemorate Independence Day with activities that directly benefit communities near its operational areas—one of which is through free cataract surgeries and eye examinations.
Claus hopes this program will have a significant impact by restoring vision and improving the quality of life for the recipients.
Pilatus Waromi, a local pastor from Nabire, expressed his gratitude for the cataract surgery, calling it a “gift of independence” for him this year.
Sarah Wamafma, a student at SMP Negeri 1 Nabire, said the free eyeglasses she received helped her study better.
Many residents saw the social initiative as the most meaningful memory of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day.
