Biak, Papua – Gas Machine Power Plant (PLTMG) is increasingly becoming a mainstay in the electricity system in Papua. This technology was chosen because it has a high level of efficiency, its compact shape so that it is easy to place in remote areas or islands, and produces relatively low emissions compared to other fossil fuel generators.
In an effort to increase the reliability of electricity supply in the eastern region of Indonesia, PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) took two strategic steps at once. First, hand over the operation and maintenance (Operation & Maintenance/O\&M) of PLTMG Biak-1 with a capacity of 15 MW. Second, sign a performance-based O\&M agreement for Holtekamp Steam Power Plant (PLTU) which has a capacity of 50 MW.
President Director of PLN Indonesia Power, Benardus Sudarmanta, revealed that these two steps are a form of real commitment of PLN IP as a strategic partner of PT PLN (Persero) in ensuring the continuity of the electricity system in Papua. According to him, the challenge of electrification in Papua is still quite big, especially because of the geographical conditions consisting of mountainous areas, dense forests, and distant islands, so it requires adaptive and efficient energy solutions.
“This step confirms PLN IP’s commitment as a reliable partner of PT PLN (Persero) in ensuring the sustainability of the electricity system in Papua which is still facing the challenge of electrification and the complexity of the electricity supply system,” explained Benardus.
He added, PLN IP has a responsibility for more than just maintaining the electricity supply. “Our task is not only to ensure that the electricity remains on, but also to carry out the constitutional mandate to provide reliable and sustainable energy access for all Indonesians, including the people in Papua. This collaboration is a real proof of the presence of PLN IP for the country,” he said.
The existence of PLTMG is considered very suitable for regions such as Papua, because it is able to operate more flexibly, has a relatively short development time, and can be used to strengthen supplies in areas that were previously prone to blackouts. With the additional capacity of PLTMG Biak-1 and the optimization of the performance of PLTU Holtekamp, PLN hopes to increase the electrification ratio and the quality of electricity services in Papua.
This strategic step is also expected to be a driver for infrastructure development and economic growth in the eastern region of Indonesia. A stable electricity supply will open up investment opportunities, increase industrial activities, and make it easier for the community to access education, health, and other public services.
PLN IP emphasized that it will continue to innovate and establish cross-sector cooperation for the equal distribution of energy throughout Indonesia, in line with the government’s vision to build from the periphery and ensure that all citizens get the same rights to quality electrical energy.
