Bawaslu Papua Tightens Oversight on Logistics Distribution Ahead of Repeat Election

Jayapura, August 2, 2025 — As the Repeat Voting (PSU) for the Papua Governor and Deputy Governor Election approaches on August 6, 2025, the Papua Provincial Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has intensified its supervision over the distribution of election logistics to ensure a smooth, secure, and transparent process.
Amandus Situmorang, Coordinator for Violation Handling, Data, and Information at Bawaslu Papua, stated that the supervision covers every stage of logistics handling — from unloading at the main warehouse to delivery across the region. This includes ballots, voting booths, ink, and other voting materials.

“We are overseeing the entire logistics chain to ensure it meets standards and to prevent any administrative or technical disruptions during the voting process,” said Amandus on Friday (Aug 1).

Several remote areas with difficult access, such as Waropen, Mamberamo Raya, and Sarmi, are under heightened scrutiny due to the logistical challenges posed by sea, river, air, and land transport. These areas are more prone to delays and potential damage to materials, which could jeopardize the election schedule.

“If any damage is found, it must be reported immediately so that the General Elections Commission (KPU) can replace the items on time. We cannot afford delays due to logistical issues,” he stressed.

Who is involved in the monitoring? Bawaslu has called on local communities, traditional leaders, and security forces — including the military and police — to actively participate in the oversight process. The agency also emphasized the importance of neutrality among all election stakeholders, including civil servants (ASN), to maintain public trust in the electoral process.

“Neutrality is non-negotiable. Any indication of bias from election organizers could undermine the integrity of the democratic process,” Amandus added.

According to the Papua KPU, 772,695 ballot papers have already been distributed since mid-July. The final phase of distribution to districts and villages is expected to be completed by two days before voting day.

This strengthened oversight by Bawaslu Papua follows a Constitutional Court ruling that mandated a repeat election in several regions, making the agency’s role crucial in safeguarding the fairness and credibility of the electoral process.
