Indonesian Energy Minister Bahlil Ensures Equitable Rural Electrification in Papua

Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equitable energy access across the archipelago, including remote villages in Papua. On Thursday (July 24, 2025), the minister conducted an on-site inspection of the rural electrification program (Lisdes) in Kepulauan Yapen and Owi Island in Biak Numfor Regency, demonstrating the administration’s dedication to energy justice.

In Tindaret Village, Kepulauan Yapen, electricity has officially reached SD Negeri Kiriyow, as part of the School Revitalization and Digital Learning initiative launched by President Prabowo Subianto. Meanwhile, in Owi Island, Minister Bahlil emphasized the urgency of expanding power generation capacity and enhancing energy infrastructure to ensure 24-hour electricity access. “We are here to make sure that what the people need will be realized — especially uninterrupted electricity,” Bahlil said during his visit.

The electrification efforts in Papua will continue through a combination of grid expansion, construction of minigrids, and deployment of individual solar power systems (PLTS) equipped with batteries. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in collaboration with state electricity company PLN and regional governments, is accelerating the implementation of the Papua Lisdes Roadmap 2025–2029 — aiming to achieve nationwide energy equity and improve the quality of life for communities in eastern Indonesia.
