Papuan Traditional Leader Yanto Eluay: We Reject July 1 as the Anniversary of the Free Papua Movement’s Military Wing (TPN-OPM), Papua Chooses Peace

Jayapura — Papuan traditional leader Yanto Eluay has firmly rejected the designation of July 1 as the anniversary of the National Liberation Army of the Free Papua Organization (TPN-OPM). According to him, this rejection reflects the collective voice of the indigenous Papuan people who uphold peace, unity, and a brighter future for the next generation.

“As a traditional leader of Papua, I strongly state that we reject July 1 as the anniversary of TPN-OPM. That date does not represent the noble values of indigenous Papuans who cherish peace and brotherhood,” Yanto Eluay stated firmly.

He emphasized that separatist movements and acts of violence are not aligned with the culture and traditions of the Papuan people, who value harmonious living within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

“We do not want our children and grandchildren to continue living under the shadow of conflict. We want to build the Land of Papua through education, health, and prosperity—not through weapons and violence,” he added.

Yanto Eluay also called on all elements of Papuan society, especially the youth, not to be easily provoked by narratives that could divide the unity of the nation.

“Papua is a land of peace, not a land of conflict. Let us safeguard this land with sincere hearts and clear minds. We reject July 1 as the TPN-OPM anniversary. We choose peace. Papua is Indonesia,” he asserted.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of a secure and stable environment as a fundamental condition for sustainable development in Papua. He stated that this requires collaboration from all parties—government, traditional leaders, religious figures, and the entire community.

Yanto Eluay’s statement stands as an important call for all components of the nation to preserve stability and harmony in Papua amid various dynamics that could lead to division.
