Central Papuan Barantin Destroys 60 Kilograms of Undocumented Pork and Rotten Orange

Timika, Central Papua — The Central Papua Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center (Barantin) carried out the destruction of tens of kilograms of illegal pork and rotten citrus fruits that were not equipped with official documents. This action is carried out as an effort to prevent the entry of animal diseases and plant-infering organisms to the Central Papua region.

The destruction was carried out on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in the courtyard of the Central Papua Quarantine Laboratory, located in Timika. The Head of Central Papua Quarantine, Ferdi, in a press statement released on Friday (27/6), explained that this activity is the result of the routine supervision of officers at the Quarantine Service Post (Pospel) of Pomako Port and Amamapare Port.

“A total of 60 kilograms of pork were secured from KM Tatamailau passengers when they arrived at Pomako Port on Friday, June 20, 2025. The meat is not equipped with a valid quarantine document, so there is a risk of carrying infectious animal diseases,” said Ferdi.

Meanwhile, 7 kilograms of oranges in rotten condition were found in the process of checking luggage at Amamapare Port. The fruit is also not equipped with a plant health certificate (phytosanitary certificate) as regulated in the quarantine regulations.

The destruction process is carried out by burning and burial methods, in accordance with standard quarantine procedures. This activity was also witnessed by Central Papua Quarantine officers, representatives of the Port Security Implementation Unit (KP3) of Pomako, PT Pelni, and commodity owners.

Ferdi emphasized that this extermination is a form of Barantin Central Papua’s commitment in protecting the region from the threat of animal diseases and agricultural disruptions that can harm the wider community.

“We appeal to all people and logistics transportation operators to always complete quarantine documents before bringing agricultural and livestock commodities into Central Papua,” he concluded.

With this firm action, Barantin hopes that public awareness and compliance with quarantine regulations will increase, in order to maintain public health, food security, and ecosystem sustainability in the Central Papua region.
