Jakarta — Violence by armed criminal groups (KKB) in Papua is drawing serious concern. Most recently, the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) allegedly attacked construction workers at a GKI church in Air Garam, Asotipo District, Jayawijaya Regency.
“The acts of violence—such as shootings against civilians, workers, teachers, and even nurses—are inhumane and violate human rights. These actions cannot be justified under any circumstances,” said Charles Kossay, a youth leader from Papua Pegunungan, in a written statement on Monday, June 23, 2025.
According to him, separatist acts in several areas such as Yahukimo, Intan Jaya, and Puncak have caused deep trauma among local communities. Many residents now fear engaging in daily activities, from farming and working in offices to participating in social events, which have come to a complete halt.
Kossay urged the TPNPB to cease all forms of violence against civilians. He emphasized that teachers and health workers are humanitarian actors who come to Papua to help communities, not to become targets of violence.
“We cannot keep losing lives due to the ambitions of a few groups. Murder cannot be tolerated. It is a grave violation and completely against the principles of humanity,” Kossay stated firmly.
He also called on the people of Papua to support legal measures taken by the authorities, in accordance with applicable procedures. Law enforcement, he said, must prioritize a humanistic approach so the public can continue to feel safe.
Kossay encouraged all parties, including traditional leaders, religious figures, and youth, to actively promote peace and serve as unifying mediators. He believes that collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies will accelerate the restoration of order in conflict-prone areas.
“We must join hands, not only to reject violence but also to build a peaceful and progressive future for Papua,” said Kossay.
He also urged the public not to be easily provoked by narratives circulating on social media or messaging groups—especially those intended to divide and create unrest.
Kossay called on all Papuans to continue supporting all development programs initiated by the central, provincial, and local governments. According to him, community support is the key to realizing a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Papua.
