KPK Uncovers Corruption Case Involving Papua Operational Funds Used to Purchase Private Jet

Jakarta —
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating a high-profile corruption case involving former Papua Governor Lukas Enembe and other related parties. The case began with findings of misuse of operational funds and official service programs during the 2020-2022 period, which allegedly caused state losses of up to IDR 1.2 trillion.

According to KPK, the proceeds from corruption were not only misappropriated for operational needs but also purportedly used to buy a private jet, which is now believed to be outside the country. The primary suspects involved include Lukas Enembe and the Assistant Treasurer of the Papua Provincial Head of Region, Deus Enumbi.

KPK even summoned a foreign national from Singapore, Gibrael Isaak, to provide testimony related to the case. Unfortunately, Gibrael did not attend the scheduled examination, and as of now, the date for the next hearing remains unknown. KPK emphasizes the importance of cooperation from all witnesses to facilitate the investigation process.

Additionally, investigators are examining the flow of funds through interviews with a witness with the initials WT, a money changer service provider in Jakarta. The goal is to trace the money trail and pursue asset recovery to restore state losses.

KPK also expressed concern over the declining score of Monitoring, Controlling, Surveillance, and Prevention (MCSP) in Papua. In 2024, the score dropped sharply from 55 to 38, indicating the need for improved oversight and stronger commitment from local authorities in anti-corruption efforts.

In this context, KPK appreciates the support from the people of Papua who continue to back law enforcement efforts. The agency stresses the importance of synergy among all parties involved in eradicating corruption, especially in regions vulnerable to misconduct like Papua.

This case further strengthens the suspicion that operational funds meant for the benefit of Papua’s people have been misused by certain individuals. Reports indicate that former Governor Lukas Enembe once created a gubernatorial regulation allowing the disbursement of these funds in a non-transparent manner, amounting to as much as IDR 1 trillion per year. It is alleged that he designed these regulations to bypass oversight from the Ministry of Home Affairs and conceal the funds from public and institutional scrutiny.
