Jayapura— In order to commemorate World Environment Day, the Papua Provincial Government held a Garbage Raiding Action as a real form of concern for environmental sustainability. The activity centered on the Kotaraja Autonomous Office Field, Jayapura City involved elements of the government, TNI-Polri, students, and the environmental community, and became an important momentum in inviting the public to be more aware of the bad effects of waste, especially plastic waste.
The activity began with a joint morning ceremony led by the Acting Assistant III of the Papua Regional Regulation, Johana Rumbiak, which at the same time officially opened the implementation of the garbage raiding action. In his speech, Johana emphasized that the problem of waste, especially plastic, has become a serious threat to the environment and public health.
“National data shows that more than 11 million tons of waste pollute the environment every year. Most of them are plastic waste that is difficult to decompose. For that, we all have to take a role in saving this earth with small steps but have a big impact, one of which is by reducing the use of plastic in daily life,” he said.
Johana also said that this activity is part of the Papua Provincial Government’s commitment to increase collective awareness and change people’s mindset towards environmental cleanliness. He hopes that symbolic actions such as garbage can be transmitted into a wider habit, starting from households to communities.
After the apple, hundreds of participants moved together to clean the environment around the Autonomous Office and a number of strategic points in Jayapura City. The activity took place with enthusiasm and collaborative spirit from various parties, which shows that taking care of the earth is a shared responsibility.
The commemoration of Environment Day 2025 is also an important reflection event for all Papuans, that the threat of climate change, pollution, and ecosystem damage cannot be handled by the government alone, but requires the involvement of all elements of the community.
With the spirit of “One Earth for the Future”, the Papua Provincial Government invites all people to make waste management a lifestyle, not just an annual ceremonial activity.
