Jayawijaya, Papua — Two civilian construction workers fell victim to a brutal act of violence allegedly carried out by an Armed Criminal Group (KKB) led by Egianus Kogoya. The deadly shooting occurred on Wednesday morning (June 4, 2025) in Kwantapo Village, Asotipo District, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua.
The victims, Rahmat Hidayat (45) and Saepudin (39), both residents of Purwakarta, West Java, were killed instantly while working on the construction of the GKI Imanuel Church in Kwantapo Village. The shooting, which took place around 8:30 AM local time (WIT), was carried out by two armed men who passed by and opened fire on the workers.
One of the victims sustained a gunshot wound to the head that pierced through the left eye, while the other was shot under the left armpit, with the bullet impacting his arm. According to witness reports, both victims attempted to flee but were pursued and executed by the assailants.
A joint team from the Jayawijaya Police and the Peace Operation Task Force (Ops Damai Cartenz) immediately moved to the scene to investigate and evacuate the victims’ bodies.
The Head of Ops Damai Cartenz, Police Brigadier General Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., accompanied by Deputy Head Kombes Pol. Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., strongly condemned the brutal attack and assured that the task force is taking serious action.
“This was a heinous act that cannot be tolerated. The Ops Damai Cartenz Task Force responded immediately. We are conducting sweeps and pursuing the perpetrators, reinforcing patrols in vulnerable areas, and gathering intelligence. We are also coordinating with the military and local community leaders to maintain stability,” Brigadier General Faizal stated in Jayapura.
He added that based on surveillance, the group is strongly suspected to be part of the KKB network led by Egianus Kogoya and affiliated with individuals such as Asbak Koronue and Hakim from the Yahukimo faction.
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations for the Ops Damai Cartenz Task Force, Police Commissioner Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., urged the public to remain calm and to trust the authorities in handling the situation.
“We urge all residents in Jayawijaya, particularly in Asotipo District, to remain calm and to immediately report any suspicious individuals or KKB activities. The Ops Damai Cartenz Task Force will continue to be present to ensure safety and maintain regional stability,” said Commissioner Yusuf.
Currently, the situation in Kwantapo Village is considered high-risk but under control. Security forces remain on high alert and are continuing intensive patrols and the pursuit of the perpetrators.
